Syllabus

 

June 23, 2010 8:30am to 12:00pm

Module I - Worksite Epidemiologic Surveillance:   (45 minutes)

  1. Historical perspective and human factors/ergonomics terminology.

  2. The OccuCom System® 4-stepped methodology of injury and illness prevention (SAFE™).

  3. Conceptual Framework for the Haddon Matrix: injury prevention strategies for the 21st century.

  4. Metrics for success: loss prevention, production/productivity ratios.

  5. Blended Learning: Employee empowerment of knowledge, skill-sets and abilities.  

Breakout Session - Applications in real world/real time for the Haddon Matrix. (15 minutes)

Module II- An Integrated Model for Maximum Efficiency: A Multidisciplinary Approach.  (45 minutes)

  1. A, B, C, D's (Related Anatomy, Biomechanics, Capabilities and Diagnoses).

  2. Anthropometrics: Different strokes for different folks (variability). 

  3. Reasonable Accommodation: Current regulatory landscape (Cal-OSHA, Fed-OSHA, SB899, etc.)

  4. Current Interventions for Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: Health services team (Medical, Chiropractic & Rehabilitation).

  5. Injury Trend Analysis: A team approach 

Breakout Session- Three examples of real world scenarios: health care, biotech, hospitality (15 minutes)

Module III- What and How to Measure: Principals and Practices of Applied Ergonomics. 

  1. Workstations should not be Hazardous to your health: To stand or sit is the question?

  2. Factors Comprising Ergonomic Design of the Work Environment: The physical factors in the office and material handling interface (e.g., support, manual, visual).

  3. Navigating Emotional Factors: Assessing Stages of Readiness for Behavior Change (TMBC Model) and measurement of work stress (deadlines, uncertainty, self doubt).

  4. Developing and designing the ideal workstation using the OccuCom screening tool.

  5. Obstacle course: Honey, I forgot the user! (Cognitive and health care ergonomics).

 

Breakout Session - Review the OccuCom Worksite Ergonomic Screening Assessment Form for Information Workers and be able to discuss key points related to state-of-the-art equipment and accessories.  

Please bring a metal tape measure, a camera (cell phone will suffice). 

Goniometers will be supplied.

Chuck Sherrod, DC, MPH, CIE is the founder and Director of the Ergonomics Institute at Life Chiropractic College West. He is President of NetErgonomics and a researcher and publisher.  


Paul Bommarito, OD, CIE is an Optometrist with a very strong domain expertise in Ergonomics.


Dave Dias is the Vice President of InterWest Insurance Company, as well as an established author of several books


Julia Weathersbee is a Senior Claims Manager for InterWest Insurance Company

 

Randy Pozos, MPH, PhD is the CEO of Ergonomics Select Advantage, a one-stop-shop for ergonomics furniture, as well as case management, and co-developer of Bioespresso Online training


Eric Stuffman, MD is an orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty in hand surgery on staff at Eden Medical Center, as well as running a private practice in Castro Valley.


Babak Alagha, MD is Family Practitioner who also works in Aviation Medicine and currently a 4th year Chiropractic student at Life Chiropractic College West.


Robert Davison, DC has been in private practice and currently one of the Life Chiropractic Health Center Clinicians, who has been very active in community health.

Life West will only notify advance registrants of any cancellation or program changes. Life West is not responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to adjustments or cancellations.

A $50 processing fee will be charged for refunds if the registrant provides written notice of cancellation at least one (1) business day prior to the seminar start date. Registration is nonrefundable if the program for which it applies is conducted as scheduled; however, a credit voucher may be issued, minus a $25 processing charge. A credit voucher must be requested within sixty (60) days of the seminar end date. The credit voucher may be applied towards another Life West program and must be redeemed within one (1) year of the original scheduled program date or it will be forfeited.
